Course Overview:
Epilepsy is a seizure disorder that involves loss of consciousness and motor (muscular) control. A person with a seizure disorder often experiences muscle convulsions. The condition is caused by a sudden change in electrical activity in the brain, as result of chemical changes in nerve cells. Seizures have different forms, and can affect different people in different ways.
Class covers:
- Definition of epilepsy
- Classification and types of seizures, including non-epileptic seizures
- Brief neurophysiology of the seizure
- The process of seizures and it’s negative effect on neurodevelopment and learning
- MNRI® approach in working with epilepsy
- MNRI® Seizure Protocol
Learner Objectives:
- Explain the development of epilepsy, risk factors, forms of epilepsy (seizures) and syndromes associated with it.
- Describe the effects of seizures on physical, emotional and cognitive development.
- Describe the neuro-anatomical dysfunctions of the brain at seizure, how stimulus processing takes place in the brain during a seizure, and how the brain negatively effects the reflex patterns at the time of a seizure.
- Demonstrate how to utilize the reflex integration tools during an epilepsy attack, preventively when there is no epilepsy attack and to recognize and observe the causes of epilepsy seizures.
- Explain the diagnostic tests for epilepsy and tools to provide the reflex protocol in order to accompany first aid for attacks, accompanying attacks and caring for the individual.
- Explain the MNRI therapeutic protocol used during seizure and after waking up.
